CAN A MOLE BE TATTOED OVER?

Although moles are usually benign a mole can change colour indicating a problem, therefore to tattoo ink over a mole may hinder your ability to spot any differences if this occurs. For your safety it is best that a mole is not tattoed over. However, a mole can be tattooed around.

DOES IT HURT TO HAVE A TATTOO?

Done in a professional setting, getting a tattoo is only mildly irritating. Different areas of the body have different sensations. Using more needle groupings can reduce the sensation.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO HAVE A TATTOO?

Price varies according to size, complexity, and time involved. Larger work is usually done at an hourly rate.

DON'T LIMIT YOURSELF BY PUTTING A PRICE ON YOUR TATTOO?

You get what you pay for. Good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good.

IF I GAIN WEIGHT WILL IT AFFECT MY TATTOO?

Not usually. The skin has a lot of elasticity (it stretches) that naturally adjusts to changes in the body. During pregnancy a womans abdomen will stretch considerably, and tattoos along the waistline will be distorted, but once the body returns to normal the tattoo will take its original shape. Deep stretch marks can damage tattoos. Building muscle won't affect the shape of a tattoo, but can make it appear to be smaller on the enlarged surface area.

CAN A TATTOO BE COVERED?

Yes. Cover up work can be challenging, depending on the design to be covered, and what the new design will be. Usually the new design has to be larger and darker, but a good cover up doesn't have to be a solid black square. Only darker colours cover, but by using some imagination, an effective cover up won't show any of the original design. Names are some of the most frequently covered tattos.

WHAT MAKES A TATTOO FADE?

Mainly the sun. Lighter colours tend to fade first. The quality of pigments used, and how well the new tattoo was applied are direct factors in the longevity of a tattoo. A top quality professional tattoo will last a lifetime with good initial care and a little sun block. Also the lighter the skin, the brighter the colours will be.

HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITIES (SWIMMING, TANNING ETC) AFTER GETTING A TATTOO?

About two weeks. Within a couple of days a dry, flaky layer of skin
will develop over the tattooed area. Maintain a small amount of lotion on the skin during this period to keep it from getting dry and itchy. Most of the flaking will end in about a week resulting in a shiny, wrinkled layer of new skin. Once this happens, you can return to your normal activities. If any smaller spots take longer to heal, wait until they're done.

CAN YOU TATTOO OVER SCARS OR STRETCH MARKS?

Please see tattoo artist for an assesment.

CAN I GET A TAN?

Bright sunlight is the enemy of your tattoo, whether it is newly healing or years old. Stay out of the sun while your new tattoo heals and make sure that you use plenty of high factor sun block thereafter.

WILL PREGNANCY AFFECT MY STOMACH TATTOO?

Possibly, depending on exactly where your tattoo is. How much stretching and distortion there could be depends on how large your bump gets. Keeping the tattoo and surrounding area well moisturised will help. Use a lotion that contains vitamin E as it's particularly good for the skin.

WILL A LOWER BACK TATTOO STOP ME HAVING AN EPIDURAL?

There doesn't appear to be any medical reason why it should. The needle used to administer the epidural will puncture tattooed skin just the same as it punctures untouched skin.

HOW CAN I STOP MY TATTOO FROM FADING?

Some fading is inevitable as you and your tattoo age but you can do a lot to keep the fading to a minimum.

First of all: stay out of the sun. Bright sunlight fades all colours and your tattoo is no exception. Always cover the area with a high factor sun block whenever you go out in the sun. Even if you have a shirt on over the tattoo, you should still protect the area.

Keep your tattoo clean and well moisturised. As above, a lotion that contains vitamin E is best as your body needs vitamin E to maintain healthy skin. Moisturise the area everyday and always after you've bathed/showered.
